The inside of the building had a distinctly unpleasant odor to it. Maira had discovered a lot of nasty smells in her life. Rotting corpses, burn pits, and just recently the rotting-egg smell of a marsh. This was a new one. It was like mildew times a hundred. This was wet country, and that dampness had sunk into every corner of this decaying building. Mold had blossomed in its wake.

Even so, it was a relief from the blood-stink of the overhang outside. Maira decided to count her blessings and continue on. Another silver lining: this place wasn’t as dark as she had expected. The Reborn had strung up lights along the walls and ceilings. They must have had a generator along with them, because the power grid here was definitely no longer operational. Maira was surprised at the waste. Were they burning the hated fuel just to keep the lights on?

There were signs of occupation all throughout the first level. They must have used this area as their campsite. They had tents set up inside the building. As funny as it looked, it was obviously a necessity. There were crumbling gaps in the walls and ceiling. Water dripped down in a hundred leaks.

Maira followed the lights. She trailed water as she walked, feeling something like a drowned rat lost in the walls. They led her up through the building floor by floor. The elevator was no longer an option, obviously. The stairs weren’t in any better condition than the rest of the building. The Reborn had gone to some pains to make them passable again. Boards spanned gaps. Weak points were reinforced. She might not agree with their philosophy, but she admired their carpentry skills.

Maira stayed alert as she moved. The captured Reborn might have said that there weren’t any more of them around, but she didn’t plan to die gullible. Even so, she was two stories up before it occurred to her that her shotgun only had one shell left in it. She had no further reloads. She contemplated the weapon and then attached it to her pack with a sigh.

The pistol in her thigh holster would have to do. It was nothing fancy. A standard military M9 sidearm, utterly mundane and practical. This one, however, was a comforting presence for her. It was the first weapon she had picked up with the coming of the Green Poison pandemic, and it had been with her ever since. It was also what she’d used to end the life of rogue agent Rowan O’Shea.

That thought made her wince. Sometimes it felt like her brain just couldn’t give her a break. There was always some part of her mind clawing around like an animal trying to escape a trap. Had it always been that way, or had it started when the world ended? Maira honestly wasn’t sure anymore. This was the way things were now.

Something creaked nearby and tore her from her thoughts. Maira slowed her steps. The sound had come from a side room, away from the trail of lights leading upward.
